Australia to get Apple iPhone 3G on July 11

Read about it here. A big caveat though is - will Australian Telco’s finally realise that they cannot charge for every single byte that you download? They almost kind of do it on broadband but we still have some of the most expensive broadband in the world (not to mention the slowest!).
I am hoping that products like the iphone will force carriers to rethink their pricing strategies. Maybe even bundle in usage across platforms/devices (why should I pay for usage twice if I am on the same carrier?).
At the moment I have a Three mobile phone with a miniscule data limit, I would use the services more if they actually had a reasonable data plan. I know that you can get free data if you just browse their web site but I would not ever want to be limited to their “walled garden”. The carrier that has the first unlimited high speed data connections on a 3G network will win this war. You can already see the mobile data card networks heating up with some of the very competitive offerings from Vodafone starting to creep in.
At the end of the day all I want is to be able to get access to high speed data from wherever I happen to be and not have to be on four different data plans to get that.
Am I hoping for too much?
