The perils of Logos

September 28th, 2005 by dave

Interesting <a href=”https://dave.shakenmartini.net/serendipity/exit.php?url_id=267&entry_id=166″ title=”http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/23415-1.html” onmouseover=”window.status=’http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/23415-1.html’;return true;” onmouseout=”window.status=”;return true;”>article about the perils of choosing a new logo.

The recent hubbub surrounding Quark’s new logo has raised several questions, problems, and misconceptions about both the creative and legal aspects of trademarks. Perhaps because Quark is a high-profile company in the graphic arts, or because it’s suffering from major public relations challenges, the design industry has collectively elevated this particular trademark conflict to unusually high emotional levels.

Can you spot the similarities?
Microsoft downgrades Claria spyware detections

September 23rd, 2005 by dave

Microsoft’s Windows AntiSpyware application is no longer flagging adware products from Claria Corp. as a threat to PC users. This comes less than a week after reports of acquisition talks between Microsoft and Claria, the company that produces the Gator brand of ad-serving software.

Anti-spyware activist Eric L. Howes, who serves as a consultant to Sunbelt Software, discovered the default changes during a recent test that included four Claria applications: Dashbar, Gator, PrecisionTime and Weatherscope.

According to the results published by Howes, four different builds of the Windows AntiSpyware beta detected the Claria products, but the default recommendation was “ignore.”

Prior to the recent tests, Microsoft’s AntiSpyware tool detected Claria’s products and presented users with a recommended action of “Quarantine.”
AppleInsider on Nano profit margins

September 23rd, 2005 by dave

AppleInsider has an <a href=”https://dave.shakenmartini.net/serendipity/exit.php?url_id=265&entry_id=164″ title=”http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1283″ onmouseover=”window.status=’http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1283′;return true;” onmouseout=”window.status=”;return true;”>article on the profit margins of the iPod Nano.

According to a writeup of the iSuppli analysis on BusinessWeek, the $199 2GB iPod nano costs Apple $90.18 in materials and $8 to assemble, leaving a profit margin before marketing and distribution costs of about 50%.

Would be nice to see a breakdown on the marketing costs though, but 50% margin on consumer electronics is fantastic!

Apparently they are getting the memory chips from Samsung for USD $27 per GB, 40% less than what other companies are paying. Going to be very hard for Apple’s rivals to top this.

London travel

September 23rd, 2005 by dave

This reporter was <a href=”https://dave.shakenmartini.net/serendipity/exit.php?url_id=263&entry_id=163″ title=”http://www.guardian.co.uk/attackonlondon/story/0,16132,1575532,00.html” onmouseover=”window.status=’http://www.guardian.co.uk/attackonlondon/story/0,16132,1575532,00.html’;return true;” onmouseout=”window.status=”;return true;”>arrested in London following the bomb attacks because:

…wearing a rain jacket, carrying a rucksack with a laptop inside, looking down at the steps while going into a tube station and checking your phone for messages just ticked too many boxes on their checklist and makes you a terrorist suspect.

Having just been in London recently wearing a rain jacket (true to English weather it did rain at least once whilst I was there) and carrying a bag with laptop and mobile phone perhaps I was lucky that I didn’t get arrested as well?

Yakuza caused Katrina

September 21st, 2005 by dave

Head over to <a href=”https://dave.shakenmartini.net/serendipity/exit.php?url_id=261&entry_id=162″ title=”http://www.weatherwars.info/katrina.htm” onmouseover=”window.status=’http://www.weatherwars.info/katrina.htm’;return true;” onmouseout=”window.status=”;return true;”>Weather Wars to read to how Scott Stevens justifies his theory of how the Yakuza caused Hurricane Katrina.

Just some random quotes from this page:

The topic of global weather manipulation is very near to a public tipping-point as Katrina and Ophelia have become an essential component in raising the awareness of what is possible in atmospheric engineering. We, as a global population, have been faced with a statistically improbable series of events during this past decade. So improbable that one must consider the potentiality that some outside influence has been at work in the skies overhead. The Soviets boasted of their geoengineering capabilities; these impressive accomplishments must be taken at face value simply because we are observing weather events that simply have never occurred before, never! Defense Secretary Cohen specifically mentioned these weapons and their capabilities in April of 1997.

Basically this guy believes that the Yakuza have created Katrina out of post-cold war Soviet technology to avenge Japan against the dropping of atomic bombs at Hiroshima.
